首先来看看什么是托福听力中的听力考点词?
听力考点词是在听力理解的每一道题目中，命题者所设计的最重要的原文与题目中重叠使用的词语。当然，这里的重叠包括原词重现，同义替换，反义词驳斥等现象;根据表述内容，也可以解读为原词重现，句式类重现，抽象概念具体表述和推测表述重现等。在听力过程中，如果考生可以识别及记录原文考点词的表述含义，即可轻松在选项中找到明确答案，反之，则题目应答无法完成。
托福听力考点词抓取实例讲解
下面举例说明听力考点词的重要和强大，ETS发布的TOEFL Practice Online(TPO)第23套练习中，可以看到，在Conversation 1中第5题的命题考点与TPO 4中Lecture 4第5题的考点词设计一致，对比如下:
【TPO 4 Lecture 4 Question 5】
答案选项:Even artists do not agree on whether the government should support the arts.
原 文:The arguments both for and against government funding of the arts are as many and as varied as the individual styles of the artists who hold them.
考点词: funding=support
【TPO 23 Conversation 1 Question 5】
答案选项:To assure the man that the event has the support of the French department.
原 文:But the French Department is funding this, on the condition that we do all the legwork.
考点词: funding=support
fund 一词的含义是“投资;资助”，同义表达是“suppor(t支持;扶持)”。假设考生熟悉这个同义转述，那么这两道题就可以轻松得到解答。而这个词，在托福lecture中也有所提及。
再来看一个例子：
Ok. Last time we finished going over some of
the fundamental concepts of nanotechnology, the multi-disciplinary science (of manipulating or controlling extremely small units of matter on the scale of molecules or even atoms).
这话中，要知道的关键词是nanotechnology。但大多考生是知道后面的尾词某种科技的意思，于是lecture里面用另一个相关的词代替关键词的定义：the multi-displinary science。这个又是什么呢?我们知道of后面就是对于这个概念的分析：manipulating or controlling extremely small units of matter on the scale of molecules or even atoms (在原子或分子量级上操控小单位物质)。
因此我们可以从括号里得知这个nanotechnology是什么意思，从而避免关键词不知道导致文章出错。另外要强调的是or和and都表示两者意思相近，所以括号里的manipulating等于or后面的意思。
